How premium reductions work

Your canton, your income, your household.

Premium reductions are paid by the cantons, with support from the federal government. Each canton sets its own rules.

  1. 1Your situation is assessedMainly your taxable income and assets, and who lives in your household. Usually based on your last tax assessment.
  2. 2Your canton’s process appliesSome cantons send a form or decide automatically, others need an application. Deadlines apply.
  3. 3Your premium bill goes downThe reduction is usually paid directly to your health insurer, so you pay less each month.
Children and young adults in training often receive more support. If you have children, it’s worth checking.
Your cover stays the same. A reduction changes what you pay, not what your insurance covers.
No promises. Only your canton decides whether you receive a reduction and how much.
