The supplementary insurance market: complex, expensive and hard to compare

  • Dozens of different products with marketing names that hide the actual coverage
  • Pre-existing medical conditions can be excluded or lead to a refusal to insure
  • Many policyholders pay for supplementary cover they never use
  • Reimbursement ceilings are often very low and poorly understood at the time of a claim
  • Waiting periods (before benefits activate) can come as an unpleasant surprise

Your needs evolve. We reassess every year whether your supplementary portfolio remains optimal.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • βœ— Taking out supplementary cover by default without analysing your actual use of the benefits
  • βœ— Ignoring waiting periods and discovering too late that a benefit is not yet active
  • βœ— Having overlapping coverage between an individual supplementary and an employer group policy
  • βœ— Not disclosing a pre-existing condition and risking a reimbursement refusal at claim time
  • βœ— Comparing only prices without reading the general terms and the list of excluded benefits
  • βœ— Never cancelling a supplementary cover that has become unnecessary out of habit or forgetfulness

Frequently asked questions

No. Unlike LAMal, supplementary insurance (VCA) has specific cancellation conditions. Generally, you must give 3 months' notice for cancellation on 31 December. Some also allow cancellation on 30 June with 3 months' notice.

Yes. Unlike LAMal, supplementary insurers can refuse applicants or exclude certain pre-existing medical conditions. This is why it is crucial not to cancel an existing supplementary policy before receiving written confirmation of acceptance from the new one.

Not necessarily. Some insurers offer combined packages (LAMal + supplementary) with discounts conditional on keeping the bundle. We always analyse this aspect before recommending any change.

It generally covers urgent or planned hospital treatment abroad, medical repatriation and sometimes the accompaniment of a close relative. Details vary significantly by product – this is one of the points we analyse as a priority.

Partially. LAMal reimburses 5 alternative medicine methods (phytotherapy, homoeopathy, anthroposophic medicine, neural therapy, acupuncture) only if prescribed by an ASCA or RME-recognised physician. Supplementary insurance generally covers a much broader spectrum.
